Phonak Audéo EON Sphere: Phonak’s noise specialist, made smaller
EON Sphere is Phonak’s newest receiver-in-canal hearing aid, offered here in the 90 and 70 technology levels. It belongs to the Sphere family — the Phonak models that carry a second, dedicated processor whose only job is separating speech from noise. The first Sphere hearing aids built a strong reputation for exactly that. EON is the follow-up, and most of its changes are about making the same idea easier to live with.
Spheric Speech Clarity 3.0: voices from every direction
Conventional hearing aids lean on directional microphones: they favour sound from in front of you and turn down the rest. That helps when the person you’re talking to sits directly opposite, but real tables rarely work that way — someone speaks from your left, someone else from behind, and the room is loud on every side.
Spheric Speech Clarity takes a different route. A deep neural network, trained on recordings of speech and noise, works out which parts of the incoming sound are voice and which are clutter, and reduces the clutter in real time. Because it isn’t simply narrowing a beam, it can help with voices that don’t come from straight ahead.
On the 90 level it switches on automatically when the hearing aids detect loud, speech-heavy surroundings, and it applies Phonak’s strongest level of denoising. The 70 uses the same hearing aid with fewer automatic features. As with any manufacturer figure, your own results depend on your hearing loss and how well the aids are fitted — which is where your clinic comes in.
Smaller and lighter than the first Sphere
The one consistent complaint about the original Sphere was its size: fitting a second processor made it noticeably bigger than most receiver-in-canal aids. Phonak says the EON Sphere is about 25% smaller and 20% lighter, which brings it close to a conventional RIC at roughly 2.4 grams. That matters more than it sounds when you wear something behind your ear all day — especially with glasses.
AutoSense OS AI 8.0 and WindBlock 2.0
AutoSense is Phonak’s automatic system for recognising where you are — a quiet room, a noisy restaurant, the car, music — and adjusting the sound to match, so you aren’t switching programmes yourself. Version 8.0 is steadier in places where the noise rises and falls, so the aids are less likely to drop out of their noise setting every time a room briefly quietens.
WindBlock 2.0 targets the rushing sound wind makes across hearing-aid microphones. If you walk, golf, cycle or spend a lot of time outdoors, it’s one of the upgrades you’re most likely to notice.
Bluetooth that works with any phone — plus Auracast
Phonak’s Bluetooth works with iPhone, Android and most other Bluetooth devices rather than one ecosystem. Calls, music, podcasts and TV audio stream to both ears, and on calls the hearing aids’ own microphones pick up your voice, so your phone can stay on the table.
EON also supports Auracast broadcast audio, a newer standard that lets venues such as airports, theatres and lecture halls stream sound directly to compatible hearing aids. It’s still rolling out, but hearing aids are kept for years, so it’s worth having now.
Battery life
Real-time neural-network processing is power-hungry, and battery life was the other weak spot of the first Sphere. Phonak says its new HYPERSONIC chip runs Sphere processing 37% more efficiently. It quotes around 22 hours of typical use and up to 38 hours at most — the real figure depends on how much you stream and how often the noise feature is working. A full charge takes about two and a half hours.
Is it right for you — and which level?
If your biggest frustration is conversation in noisy places — family dinners, restaurants, busy workplaces — EON Sphere is one of the strongest options available, because that is exactly the problem it was designed around.
